The Shepherd of the Hills Fish Fry Under the Ozark Stars
Branson's nightlife runs on a different clock than most cities — the shows on the Strip let out at nine-thirty, and by ten the town has a choice: go to bed or go somewhere that doesn't require a ticket. The Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery, run by the Missouri Department of Conservation below Table Rock Dam, hosts outdoor events and gatherings that feel more like community suppers than entertainment, and the Friday fish fry nights at the White River Fish House nearby capture the Ozarks at their most convivial.
The restaurant sits on the banks of Lake Taneycomo, and the trout — pulled from the cold tailwaters below the dam — arrives fried, grilled, or smoked with a freshness that landlocked fish rarely achieves. The deck overlooks the water, and on warm evenings the heron fishing below the dam provide the floor show while the kitchen provides the rest. The beer list is local — Mother's Brewing from Springfield, Piney River from the Ozarks — and the crowd is fishermen, families, and the pleasantly exhausted survivors of an afternoon on the lake.
After dinner, the dam itself is illuminated, and the water flowing through the generators creates a constant, soothing roar that is Branson's own version of white noise — the sound of a lake being useful.
Insider tip: Drive to the Table Rock Dam overlook after dark. The dam lights reflect on the tailwater, and on clear nights the Ozark sky delivers stars that city dwellers have forgotten exist. Branson's best show doesn't have a marquee.
